Discipline

Guangyang Secondary School adopts a whole-school holistic approach in managing school discipline with the aim of instilling self-discipline in our pupils.  As such the department members include the School Management Committee members, Full Time School Counsellors, Prefect Mistress, Hon VSC and the Operations Managers.  Heads of Departments and Subject Heads are also Level Discipline Co-ordinators. The development of discipline in pupils is an important aspect of their character development. In this respect, the school’s holistic approach to discipline is in line with the SEL competencies. The management of discipline thus covers three aspects: developmental, preventive and corrective. i. The developmental aspect of discipline involves instructing, training, engaging, inculcating school values and setting standards of acceptable behaviours. The school encourages greater social bonding between pupils and between pupils and teachers. ii. The preventive aspect of discipline focuses on limit setting and the laying down of ground rules. This is to ensure that pupils are fully aware of the boundaries of what is considered to be acceptable or unacceptable behvaiours and the consequences of breaking the rules. iii. Lastly the corrective aspect of discipline involves the use of teaching strategies and intervention procedures to promote acceptable behvaiours and change undesirable ones. The aim is to seek cooperation rather than mere compliance in getting misbehaved pupils to bear the consequences of his wrong behaviour and to work towards preventing further offences.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

The student leadership framework is based on the foundation of character development and it has three core tenets, namely, developing self, developing others and developing programmes. These tenets are integrated with the school values (integrity, perseverance, respect, care and concern, and responsibility), the SEL competencies and the NE values. They provide the fundamental foundations which cuts across the different leadership groups: Uniform Groups, Sports and Games, Clubs and Societies, Precfectorial Board, Class Committees and Peer Support Leaders.

The main objective of the school’s student leadership programme is to provide leadership development opportunities for all. It is progressive and developmental in nature. The Lower Secondary pupils are introduced and exposed to generic leadership skills. At the Upper Secondary level, identified pupils with greater leadership potential are given specific leadership skills training through their different CCAs or CCDs.
PREFECTORIAL BOARD

The Prefectorial Board plays a key role in assisting the Discipline Committee and the teachers in the management of school discipline. The Prefect Councillors are involved in training junior prefects in their respective roles and duties. They are the key engines in driving programmes for the Prefectorial Board and assist the teachers in ensuring that Prefects are on task. Besides the daily routine operations, Prefects are also engaged in Entrepreneurship Projects, Green Audit Projects and Community Involvement Programme. For school events, the Prefects are also involved in helping respective teachers in charge to plan and execute their programmes or events.  Some of the school events that the Prefects were engaged in in 2009 include the Chinese New Year concert and the Teachers’ Day celebrations.

Leadership Training

Prefects are given the necessary training to help them to be effective in their roles. Most of the training is conducted by the Prefect Councilors. The Board members will also complete an overseas leadership training course in planning, coaching and teamwork. This year, the prefects also play a key role in the Secondary One Orientation Camp as they are tasked to plan the Orientation Camp together with other student leaders.

Projects

1. Entrepreneurship Projects
The Entrepreneurship arm of the Board oversees the various projects to raise funds for the Board activities as well as for charity. Three projects are in placed this year – the Valentine’s Day sale of bouquets and confectionaries, the sale of apparels, and the Sports Day sale of drinks and snacks.

Through these projects, the prefects will learn not just entrepreneurship skills but also the importance of teamwork, cooperation, perseverance and bonding among the members.

In order to hone their entrepreneurship skills further, a group of selected prefects also participated in the annual PushCart Challenge in 2009 organized by Republic Polytechnic. During the competition, the prefects had the chance to sell items to the public and learnt essential entrepreneurship skills.

2. Green Projects
This area is conducted by the Environmental arm of the Board. This will include the Green Audit Project where it culminates on Earth Day where pupils from the primary schools are invited to our school to view the various green projects as well as being given talks by the prefects on environmental issues like pollution and recycling. A skit will also be put up to drive home the message.

3. Community Involvement Programme
In 2009, the prefects conducted the first overseas Community Involvement Project. During the Prefects’ Camp in June, the prefects visited an orphanage in Batam and spent a day with the orphans. They raised funds among themselves and brought along with them stationery, clothes and daily essentials for the orphans as well. Through this project, the prefects learnt the importance of showing care and concern for the less fortunate and being contented with what they have and enhanced their social emotional competencies like social awareness and self awareness. This simple gesture touched the orphans and the Prefects understood the joy of sharing and caring for others.

Since last year, the prefects started a service learning project with our community partner, Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled.  Every Monday, a group of prefects are scheduled to visit Bishan Home and make fruit juices for the residents. The ‘juicing corner’ project is warmly welcomed by the residents and they look forward to Mondays when they are able to have fresh fruit juices. Since we started the project, the prefects learnt more about the residents and are planning to do more for the Home. This year, prefects are planning to introduce a short segment of songs and dance to the residents while the juices are being served.
