Parent Support Group

Guangyang Secondary School (GYSS) Parent Support Group (PSG) was officially formed after the merger of Braddell Westlake and Guangyang Secondary School and also in support of Ministry of Education’s COMPASS to promote and strengthen the collaboration between school, parents and community in education.

The main aim of GYSS PSG was to work in partnership with the school to nurture our pupils into lifelong and engaged learners. PSG works towards an effective relationship whereby members contribute innovative and positive ideas towards promoting school, home and community collaboration for mutual benefit and quality education for our pupils.

The PSG group holds monthly meetings and these meetings served as effective platforms whereby members pool ideas and resources and to foster parental events.

PSG achieves the above aim through the following events: Chinese knots workshop during Chinese New Year, conducting dumping wrapping session during Duan Wu Jie, promoting cultural and ethnic awareness during Racial Harmony Day celebration and Facilitators in environmental programs during Community Day.

In 2008, School Family Education (SFE) was introduced into GYSS. SFE coordinator and GYSS PSG initiated several programs and workshops for the parents. Workshops include talks on mentoring teens in the internet age and financial management. There were also family bonding programs such as excursions to Marina Barrage and bowling at Civil Service Club.

Over the years, our PSG has gradually grown stronger in strength and members aspire to increase participation of our parents in all areas of school activities to provide a more conducive educational environment for our pupils in years to come.

Our Aims

  • To work in partnership with the school to help our children achieve the best
  • To promote school, home and community collaboration for mutual benefit and quality education
  • To support the principal and staff in carrying out projects that are beneficial to students and the school’s image
  • To collaborate on ways the school and parents can work together on school projects and events
  • To initiate new projects in the school that will benefit our children
  • To provide expertise in certain areas that may require parent’s help
  • To provide resources that can help the school become a quality learning community

SFE FAMILY BONDING ACTIVITY

As part of our SFE programme, a family bonding activity was organized in May at the Civil Service Club Bowling Alley for our pupils and their parents. The objective was to foster closer family ties by getting the parents and children involved in a common activity.

Twenty-eight of us gathered at the bowling alley and spent an enjoyable Saturday afternoon trying our very best to knock down as many pins as possible. All this was done amidst much fun and laughter and at the end of the three hours, everyone agreed that they had a great time and looked forward to participating in the next SFE family bonding activity organized by the school.

PSG 2009 Racial Harmony Day Celebration

On 15 July 2009, the PSG co-organised the school’s Racial Harmony Day Celebration. Pupils had the opportunity to learn more about our Chinese, Indian, Malay and Peranakan communities, in terms of their food and various practices, at the cultural corners set up in the school hall.

The PSG members together with a few pupil helpers manned the various cultural displays and were on hand to provide explanations and hands-on demonstrations. Pupils were also given the opportunity to answer simple questions on-the-spot based on what they had seen and heard.

Our pupils had an enjoyable and fruitful time learning more about Singapore’s various communities from our PSG members. They could also see first-hand how our parents are active and contributing members of the larger Guangyang family.

We would like to say “A very Big Thank You” to all our parents who took time off their busy schedules to make our Racial Harmony Day Celebration special this year.

Xie Xie!  Nandri!  Terima Kasih!  Thank You!
