About Us

4 Green Sunday

The school’s Environmental Science believes in the school’s values of Green, Gracious and Giving. Our weekly activities plan to develop members to become responsible and environment-conscious citizens. By physically interacting with nature, students engage themselves in urban gardening and practice ways of being Green (e.g. 3Rs, sustainable living practices).

This year, members were exposed to the concept of social enterprise and had a glimpse of how cooperative business organisation works. Students also widen their knowledge and insights on gardening through learning journeys and workshops. To celebrate Singapore’s bicentennial, students went on the Pioneer’s Trail, where they learnt about how herbs and spices (e.g. nutmeg, tamarind, cinnamon and cloves) contributed to the prosperity of Singapore.

To provide platforms for members
(1) to upkeep a clean and green environment in school
(2) to advocate for change in practices for a more environmentally friendly world
(3) to lead the student body to think about issues between human and environment
(4) to realise the value of science and technology in improving the quality of life
(5) to develop interests and passion for the environment

3 sale of harvest
  • We have to reduce the amount of plastic we use and clear up the rubbish in the ocean. The fishes eat those rubbish (thinking they are food) and we will end up eating the fishes contaminated with microplastics. – Clarabelle, 2E3
  • We need to protect the ocean as it is an important source of food for us. – Andrea Lee, 2E4

Key Activities

Entrepreneurship Programmes

  • Sales of seasonal harvest (e.g. sweet potato leaves, pandan, papaya fruits etc)
  • Preparation and sales of in-house upcycled products
    § Vermicomposting (worm tea)
    § Crushed egg shells
  • Social Entrepreneurship Training Modules - by the Singapore National Co-operative Federation (SNCF)

Urban Gardening

  • Soil gardening of edible plants – fruit trees (e.g. papaya, luffa), herbs (e.g. moringa, lemon grass), sweet potato, sugar cane, pineapple etc
  • Vertical gardening - aeroponics farming (using Aerospring vertical farming system)
  • Planter boxes and green walls (ornamental plants - creeper plants such as maiden’s jealousy, betel plants)

Outreach Programmes

  • Bishan East Zone 1 RC - Green Sunday (bi-weekly)
  • Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled

Learning Journeys

  • Soap making from recycled oil Workshop – Temasek Polytechnic
  • Herbs and Spices Learning Journey, Botanic Gardens
  • Pioneers’ Trail Learning Journey, Ann Siang Hill Park and Telok Ayer Green
  • Green Learning Journey to Bukit Panjang Eco Community Centre

Science Research and Communication

  • Development of self-directed research topics – Design for a Better World, based on The Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
  • Film screening and discussion – on the movie ‘Aquaman’
  • Presentations and public speaking (e.g. Youth for the Environment Day speech, CCA Fair, internal and external sales)
  • NPark BioBlitz for School – data-collection of biodiversity in school
